Magazine masthead titles can be almost as important as the images you include on the cover. The style of the title used should become synonymous with the magazine. To have an impact, many modern youth-oriented magazines use 3D-style extruded letters. If you are using Adobe Illustrator to create graphics and text for your magazine, you can easily create these letters in Illustrator and then import them into a desktop publishing application like QuarkExpress or InDesign.
1. Start Illustrator. Select “File” from the menu and choose “New.” In the dialog that appears, enter the width and height you want for your masthead and set the “Raster Effects” to “High.” Click “OK.”
2. Select the “Type” tool from the menu, and in the options at the top choose the font style, size and color you want for your masthead title. Then type the letters onto the canvas.
3. Click on the “Select” tool, then click on the text. Select “Effect” from the menu and choose “3D.” From the options, choose “Extrude and Bevel.” A dialog will open.
4. Click on “Preview.” Adjust the box preview until you like the result. Click “OK” and save your work.
