The 3-D effect can make words and images look as if they are coming off the page. When integrated on a website, a 3-D image can help draw attention to important information and also add to the appeal of the overall design. If you plan to use some three-dimensional images on a website, use software designed specifically for generating a 3-D effect.
1. Use Advantage3D to create your 3-D website images. This is a web-based utility that allows you to create the altered images right from your browser. You can create panoramas with rotating views or basic 3-D “walk-around” images by choosing from a variety of shapes. The software also allows you to create mini-animations in 3-D. When you have finished creating your image, you can right-click and save the image to your computer for use on your website. The software requires you to sign up for an online account, and allows you to try out the tool before you buy it.
2. Create your 3-D website images using Xara3D, a web graphics program. Open an image from your computer or create one using the software’s drawing tools. You can then apply 3-D effects, including shadows, bevels, and rotation by clicking and dragging the name of the option on top of the current image in your workspace. When done, save the file as a JPEG, GIF, or PNG for display on your website. The software is free during a 15-day trial period. You can make both static and moving images using this stand-alone software.
3. Generate 3-D web images using Adobe Photoshop. This image editing program allows you to make images appear three-dimensional using the “Blending Options” tool, which is accessible by right-clicking each drawing layer of the image. Add bevels, emboss the image, and rotate it to create the effect. Photoshop permits saving in just about any image format—click “Save for web” on the “File” menu to make the 3-D image web-ready (GIF or JPEG format) automatically.
