Specifications Of A Msi Wind Pc

Micro-Star International’s MSI Wind is an ultramobile PC, also called a UMPC or netbook. Designed for people on the go, the MSI Wind encompasses all the traits that most look for in a netbook — it’s small, light and functional. MSI offers more than two-dozen versions of the Wind netbook as of early 2011. All feature Intel Atom processors, and most have a 10-inch screen. Typical of the MSI Wind line is the U160DX-472US model.

Microprocessor & Memory

The MSI Wind U160DX is equipped with Intel’s Atom N455 microprocessor. This CPU runs at 1.66 GHz and the cache memory totals 512 KB. The netbook also comes with 1 GB of DDR3 SDRAM memory running at 667 MHz. This memory is upgradeable, but limited to a single DDR3 module.

Storage & Optical Drive

The Wind U160DX is equipped with a 250 GB SATA hard disk drive. While no on-board optical drive is available, users can connect an external USB optical drive to the Wind to give it CD/DVD/BD reading and writing capability.

Chipset, Graphics & Audio

The MSI Wind U160DX is equipped with an Intel NM10 motherboard and an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 graphics processor. Since there is no dedicated video card, the MSI Wind’s video shares the same bus as the main CPU, which saves on power and space. However, this sometimes results in a performance penalty, as the CPU is taxed harder to keep up with both processes. The Wind is also HD-audio compatible and features two internal speakers.

Memory Card Reader & Ports

The netbook supports a four-in-one removable memory card reader. Supported formats for the Wind include SD, MMC, MS and XD cards. The MSI Wind also features three USB 2.0 ports, a 15-pin D-Sub VGA graphics output port, and ports for microphone input and headphone output.

Networking

The MSI Wind U160DX is equipped with a Ethernet 10/100 LAN port for broadband internet connections. Additionally, the MSI Wind has built-in WLAN capability, featuring a 802.11 b/g/n WLAN card. It is also compatible with Bluetooth-enabled devices.

Display, Operating System & Other Features

The MSI Wind U160DX features a 10-inch widescreen LCD screen with WSVGA glossy backlighting. The maximum resolution for this screen is 1,024-by-600 pixels. The computer is shipped with the Microsoft Windows 7 Starter edition. It also features a “chiclet” style keyboard with rubber keys, and a seamless touchpad integrated into the casing and identified by an array of dots. The mouse functions are also integrated into a single rocker, allowing for right and left clicking by pressing the appropriate section of the rocker. The Wind has a built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam.

Power & Physical Dimensions

The netbook is powered by three lithium-ion cells, which according to testing by the website Trusted Reviews can provide up to seven hours of video playback when the screen is set to 50% brightness. MSI states that the battery can provide up to 15 hours of continuous usage when the Wind is set to Eco-mode. The Wind is also outfitted with an AC adapter, with 19V of 40W DC output and 100 to 240V of AC input. The MSI Wind is 10.24 inches long, 7.09 inches wide and 0.74-inches tall. It weighs 2.1 lb.
