Update A Radeon Video Card

Upgrade your Radeon video card to address compatibility and performance issues.

A video card renders 2D and 3D graphics for display on a computer monitor. The Radeon line of video cards offers high-performance graphics for gaming, video editing and multimedia software. Radeon video cards let you connect your computer to a standard monitor or a high-definition television and support the use of multiple displays. AMD releases updated driver software for the company’s Radeon line from time to time to address compatibility and performance issues with new games, applications and display devices.

1. Select “Computer” in the “Start” Menu. Click “System Properties” and open “Device Manager.” Click on the arrow next to “Display adapters.” Note the series and model of your Radeon card. You need this information to update the video card. Click on the video card and “Properties” and select the “Driver” tab. Write down the “Driver Date” and “Driver Version.” Exit the “Display” Settings.

2. Visit AMD’s Graphics Drivers & Software page (see Resources). Choose either “Desktop Graphics” or “Notebook Graphics” from the “Step 1” drop-down menu. Select the product series from the “Step 2” menu and the video card’s model number for “Step 3.” Choose which operating system you are using from the “Step 4” menu and click “Display Results.”

3. Compare the results with the information you wrote down from the Device Manager in Step 1 to see if you need to update your card. If you do, download the display driver by clicking on the link.

4. Uninstall the old drivers before installing the update. Open “Control Panel” under the Windows “Start” menu and click “Programs and Features.” Select “ATI Catalyst Control Center” and uninstall it, and then remove the “ATI Display Drivers.” Restart the computer.
