Use Supporting Details Graphic Organizers
Graphic organizers provide a visual means by which to organize information. These tools can be tremendously helpful in assisting visual learners in sorting information they obtain from reading or preparing to compose a written work. A supporting detail graphic organizer is useful in organizing single paragraphs or entire essays. Through the use of this type of graphic organizer, you can create a detailed plan you can translate into a written work. A supporting detail graphic organizer comes in many variations, but all are filled out in a similar fashion.
1. List the main idea or topic. Place the main idea at the top of the graphic organizer. List the main idea by writing the thesis, or write a short phrase that sums up the key point of the essay or paragraph.
2. Add the supporting details. Place three to five supporting details coming off of the main idea. These supporting ideas should back up the main point or prove the validity of the thesis statement by providing anecdotal or statistical evidence.
3. Place the details in a logical order. Organize the supporting details in a coherent fashion. Place these details in chronological order, or organize them from least to most important, placing the most convincing fact last so that the reader receives the most compelling evidence last.
4. Transfer the paragraph or essay to a traditional form. Recopy the main idea and support into a paragraph, or use it as a plan for a larger essay, making each support the beginning of a paragraph and elaborating in more detail to produce a multi-paragraph work.
5. Use additional supporting details graphic organizers to produce separate paragraphs. If you are producing a multi-paragraph work, but only use the organizer to reflect information in one paragraph, add additional organizers until you have one for each paragraph in your essay. Use the additional organizers as you did the first one.
